WinMan Volleyball Club crowned as National Champions!
Earlier this week, (May 17-19, 2015) WinMan Volleyball Club went undefeated to capture the 18 & Under Boys Gold medal at the Volleyball Canada National Championships held in Calgary, Alberta.
This marks an unprecedented 10th National Championship for the WinMan Volleyball Club which has been in existence since 2003. No club across Canada has won as many titles as WinMan. WinMan Volleyball Club is based in Winnipeg, Manitoba and draws its athletes from Winnipeg and its surrounding communities.
The WinMan Wesmen 18U boys defeated a very tough NOOKS Volleyball Club team (Alberta Champions) in the final, 2-0. Scores were 25-21, 25-10.
Tournament all stars from WinMan were Mikael Clegg (Selkirk, MB), and Seth Friesen (Brandon, MB). Tournament MVP was Eric Loeppky (Steinbach, MB).
This WinMan team won Volleyball Manitoba’s Provincial Championship the past 5 seasons as 14U, 15U, 16U, 17U, as well as this past Spring at 18U. This team has trained under the tutelage of Head Coach Mike Stephens for the past 4 seasons, and this year the team added Assistant Coach Larry McKay who is the Head Coach for the University of Winnipeg men’s volleyball program and the Assistant Coach for the Men’s Senior National team.
This was not the first time that the NOOKS team has met the WinMan team at the National Championships as these two teams have competed against each other at the National Championships in previous years. This past spring, the two teams met over the Easter weekend at Mount Royal College’s “Best of the West” tournament in the semi finals with WinMan defeating NOOKS in that contest as well.
